Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area located along the Columbia River, straddling the border of Oregon and Washington. With its gorgeous natural wonders, Columbia River Gorge (CRG) has attracted thousands of domestic and international visitors in past decades. However, the Columbia River Gorge is more than a scenic area, it is also an ideal place for family recreation activities. Many facilities for outdoor recreation activities have been established, including hiking, mountain biking, windsurfing, camping, fishing, boating, wildlife watching, photography and picnicking. With the consideration of the potential market segments of local residents, analyzing demographic variables will facilitate CRG national park management team's decision-making on their marketing plan. This paper intents to explore the application of GIS in park and recreation management as a decision support tool through analyzing the size of Columbia River Gorge regional population and their socioeconomic characteristics, cultural values and life style.
